Lord of the Koga Domain in Shimousa Province (Koga City, Ibaraki Prefecture) in the early Edo period. Born in Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture). Nicknamed Denhachiro, he was appointed Ukyo no Daibu. His father was Nagata Shigemoto (Naokichi). He initially served Tokugawa Ieyasu's son Nobuyasu, but after his death he served Ieyasu and changed his family name to Nagai. He took the head of Ikeda Tsuneoki in the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute. After the Battle of Sekigahara, he was ordered by Ieyasu to study yusoku (ancient precedents) under Hosokawa Yusai, who was knowledgeable about the ceremonies of the Muromachi Shogunate. Ieyasu had great confidence in him, and wanted him to become his son's attendant elder, but he firmly refused. In 1622 (Genna 8), when he was transferred to Koga with a fief of 72,000 koku, he sat in the council and from then on lived in Edo. <References> Suzuki Shigemoto, Nagai Naokatsu
