A Greek island in the eastern Aegean Sea, just 6 km from the Turkish coast. Hilly with a highest point of 1,297 m. Produces figs, grapes, olives, antimony, marble, and is famous for frankincense (a type of resin). The central city, Chios, is a good port on the east coast and was one of the most important poleis in ancient Greece. During the Greek War of Liberation (1822), a massacre of the inhabitants occurred by Turkish troops. It was annexed by Greece in 1912. Historical sites such as the Byzantine monastery of Nea Moni were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1990, along with the monasteries of Daphni and Hosios Loukas near Athens. 904 km2 . Population: 53,408 (2001).
