A copper sulfide mineral. It is formed as a secondary mineral by the decomposition of copper ores, mainly chalcopyrite, on the earth's surface, and as a primary mineral, it occurs in deep to epithermal deposits, kuroko deposits, contact metasomatic deposits (skarn-type deposits), and copper-bearing iron sulfide deposits. It is extremely rare to find euhedral deposits, and its occurrence is limited to certain areas, so it is not yet known in Japan. It is often lumpy and, together with other copper minerals, constitutes high-grade copper ores. It changes color immediately in air, turning from copper-red to blue-purple. In Japan, famous sources include the Akenobe Mine (closed) in Hyogo Prefecture, the Kotsu Mine (closed) in Yamakawa Town, Tokushima Prefecture (now Yoshinogawa City), and the Kamikita Mine (closed) in Tenmabayashi Village, Kamikita County, Aomori Prefecture. The English name is named after the Austrian mineralogist Ignaz von Born (1742-1791).
