An infectious disease of birds caused by a protozoan of the Leucocytozoon genus. This protozoan is closely related to malaria and coccidia, and its development cycle has three stages, taking place both inside the bird and inside the vector insect. Below, we will use chickens as an example. Sporozoites that enter the chicken's body when the biting midge sucks blood become first-generation schizonts in the endothelial cells of blood vessels in the spleen, liver, lungs, etc., and then are carried from the blood to organs throughout the body where they continue to develop. After this, second-generation schizonts (merozoites) develop from the schizonts and become parasitic within red blood cells in the peripheral blood.

ロイコチトゾーン属Leucocytozoonの原虫に起因する鳥類の伝染病。この原虫はマラリアやコクシジウムとも近縁なもので，その発育環は三つの段階があり，鳥類の体内と媒介昆虫体内とで行われる。以下ニワトリを例に述べる。ヌカカの吸血時にニワトリの体内に侵入した胞子小体は，脾，肝，肺などの血管内皮細胞で第1代の分裂小体(シゾント)となり，この後血中から全身の臓器に運ばれて発育をつづける。この後シゾントから第2代の分裂小体(メロゾイト)が末梢血中で赤血球内の寄生状態となる。
