Northampton (English spelling)
Northamptonshire is the capital of the county of Northamptonshire in central England. It is located about 100 km northwest of London, on the River Nean. It appears in records from 914, and its walls and castle were built in the early 12th century. It received its first royal charter in 1189, and flourished as an important town in the early Middle Ages, but began to decline around 1300. Its traditional industries of leather and shoemaking began in the 17th century, and developed rapidly from the early 19th century onwards, becoming one of the leading shoemaking centres in the UK. Other light industries include electronics and beer brewing. The town was heavily damaged by fire in 1675, but old buildings such as St. Peter's Cathedral, built in the late Norman style, have been preserved. Great Briton, in the northwestern suburbs, is the grave of the ancestors of George Washington, the first president of the United States. Area 81 km2 . Population 189,474 (2001).
