A representative example of Japanese-funded spinning companies in China (Zaihuabo). Founded in August 1887 (with capital of 500,000 yen) with four Osaka ginning cotton wholesalers, it handled domestic cotton as well as Indian and American cotton in partnership with Tata Shokai. It was one of the three major cotton trading companies, but after the Russo-Japanese War it was slow to join the trend of purchasing cotton directly from the source, and scaled back its cotton business. It then acquired Osaka Twisted Threads (1903) and Nippon Boshoku (1905) to enter the spinning industry. Building on its experience in trading cotton-related products in China, the company built its third factory (20,000 spindles) in Shanghai in 1911 at the initiative of director Kawamura Rihei, an advocate of expansion into the continent, marking the beginning of new factories in Shanghai.
