A group of Italians who lived in central Italy in ancient Italy. They are thought to have spoken the Oscitan language. The Samnites and Sabellines are a branch of the Sabines. The Sabines, who lived on one of the seven hills of Rome, are thought to have merged with the Latins to form the city-state of Rome. However, the Sabines near Rome are said to have fought against Rome from the time of the Roman monarchy until 449 BC, and were completely defeated by Curius Dentatus in the war of 304-290 BC. They were granted citizenship in 268 BC and became fully Romanized. They are known for their superstitious practices and strong religious faith. Although the anecdote of the "Sabine Raid" is fiction, it is not unbelievable that they merged with the Romans, and their religion and practices continued to live on among the Romans.
