Year of birth: Year of birth and death unknown. A tayu of old Joruri in the early Edo period. Also known as Edo Miyanai. The originator of Isejima-bushi. He is said to have been a disciple of Toraya Gendayu, but this is not certain. His stage name was first seen at an Ise performance in 1635, so there is a theory that he was originally from Ise and was a narrator of sekkyo. He was also active in Edo, and is thought to have entered Kyoto at the end of the Kanei era when "Ichinotani Sakaraku" was published, and competed with Yamashiro Sanai (Wakasa no Kami Yoshitsugu) at Shijo-gawara. He was highly praised as a rival to Sanai in Kyoto, with all five of his existing original versions labeled "Edo". He also had a wide range of activities in Osaka. It is said that together with Sanai, he was looked down upon as a "kawarabushi" (river-style runaway) and looked down on even more than the zatō (a zato). However, this is where the true nature of Joruri as a form of entertainment developed among the lower classes really shines. In 1675, Uji Katayu (Kaga no Jō) used this name (the name of the performance rights). <References> Hiroyuki Sakaguchi, "Highway Joruri - Sanai and Miyauchi" (Humanities Research, Vol. 29, Part 1) (Yasuda Fukiko) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
