1905‐72 Soviet playwright. Born in Ukraine, he worked on the railway from the age of 14. He later graduated from Kiev Pedagogical University. His representative works include The Fall of the Fleet (1933), Plato and Krechet (1934), Truth (1937, written in response to a government call for a play featuring Lenin to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution), The Front (1942), Why Did the Stars Smile? (1957), and others. He wrote many works with easy-to-understand plots that celebrated patriotism, national consciousness, and the optimism of the people, and was a very popular writer for a time.
