Kaijusanji Temple - Monster Temple

Japanese: 海住山寺 - かいじゅうせんじ
Kaijusanji Temple - Monster Temple

This temple is located in Kamocho Reihei, Kizugawa City, Kyoto Prefecture. It belongs to the Chisan school of the Shingon sect. Its mountain name is Fudarakusan. It is said to have been founded by Roben in 735 (Tenpyo 7) as a temple at the request of Emperor Shomu, and was rebuilt by Jokei after it burned down in 1137 (Hōen 3), so he is regarded as the founder of the temple's restoration. During the time of his disciple Kakushin, the temple's land and various buildings were established and the temple's fortunes reached their peak, but even now, it is located in the mountains surrounded by old trees, and traces of its large size remain. Within the temple grounds are the five-story pagoda (National Treasure) erected in 1214 (Kenpo 2), as well as the Monju Hall (National Important Cultural Property), the main hall, the Yakushi Hall, and many other temple treasures, including the principal image of the eleven-faced Kannon (National Important Cultural Property) and Bishamonten.
