A town in Tamana County in the northwest of Kumamoto Prefecture. Most of the area is hilly. The Kagoshima Main Line runs through the town. Mandarin orange and tobacco are cultivated here, and rice is also produced. Limestone is mined and processed in the area around the main settlement, Konoha, and there is also a pottery manufacturer for the folk craft, Konohazaru. Area: 24.33 km2 . Population: 5,554 (2010).
