In the pre-classical period, sonatas by Italians Domenico Alberti (c. 1710-c. 1740) and Baldassare Galuppi (1706-85), as well as the sonatas and concertos by the sons of JS Bach, are important. Emanuel left behind about 250 pieces for the harpsichord and clavichord, and also wrote a two-part work, Essay on the Correct Method of Playing the Clavier (1753, 62), which marked an era in the history of performance theory. …

In the mid-18th century, the Italians Pergolesi, Sanmartini, and Baldassare Galuppi (1706-85), the German Graun brothers (Johann Gottlieb Graun (c. 1702-71) and Carl Heinrich G. (c. 1703-59)), Quantz, and Emanuel Bach were some of the most well-known. However, some German composers, including the sons of JS Bach, moved towards the intense emotional expression of the Sensitive Style, which could be called the storm-and-storm period of music, and gradually moved away from the aristocratic and decorative character of the original Rococo and Elegant Styles. …

Starting with the Italian composer Francesco Araja (1709-70?), who had been in Russia for many years since 1735, leading Italian composers such as Baldassare Galuppi (1706-85), Tommaso Traetta (1727-79), Paisiello, Giuseppe Sarti (1729-1802), and Cimarosa stayed in St. Petersburg as the court conductor of Catherine the Great (reigned 1762-96).
