Shinotsu wilderness

Japanese: 篠津原野 - しのつげんや

This peatland stretches across the north bank of the Ishikari River, occupying the southern part of the Ishikari Plain in central Hokkaido. From 1955 to 1971, the first phase of the Shinotsu Region Peatland Development Project was carried out based on the Hokkaido Comprehensive Development Plan, and large-scale drainage and soil-adding led to the development of rice paddies. In 1965, the Shinotsu Canal (total length 23.6 km, width approx. 80 m), which became the main drainage channel for the region, was completed, and the Aoyama Dam was also built on the Ishikari River. Soil excavated from the canal was used to add soil, forming rice paddy areas.

北海道中部，石狩平野の南部を占める石狩川北岸に広がる泥炭地帯。 1955～71年に第1期篠津地域泥炭地開発事業が北海道総合開発計画に基づいて実施され，大規模な排水と客土により，水田化が進んだ。 65年地域の幹線用排水路となる篠津運河 (全長 23.6km，幅約 80m) が完成，石狩川には青山ダムもできた。運河の掘削土を利用して客土が行われ，水田地帯を形成。
