〘Noun〙 ("覲" means audience) 1. When feudal lords or lords of vassal states visit the court to pay their respects to the sovereign. *Edo Hanjo-ki (1832-36), vol. 5 "A lord of a large country pays a visit to the court to pay his respects to the emperor." [Liji - Raku-ki] 2. When the emperor pays a visit to the palace of the retired emperor or empress dowager. This is a ceremony to pay respects to the retired emperor or empress dowager at the beginning of the year in particular. The Crown Prince also has this ceremony when he comes of age. *Shoku Nihon Koki - First year of Jowa (834), January _1st day of the month, "The retired emperor is visited by the retired emperor at Junna- _in and the retired emperor is welcomed."
