Eastern barbastelle (Chichibu bat)
A mammal of the family Vespertilionidae in the order Chiroptera. It is also called the Eastern Chibu Bat. It is a medium-sized insectivorous bat with a nearly black body and flat face. In Japan, a single specimen was first collected in 1883 in Chichibu County, Saitama Prefecture. The Japanese name comes from this place name. It is distributed from the Caucasus to northern India, western China, and Japan (Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, and Chubu regions), but is extremely rare in all regions. In Japan, it hibernates alone in houses or caves, and in the summer active season, it lives in mixed forests of Japanese oak and larch. Its forearm length is 40-42 mm, head and body length is 49-62 mm, nostrils are large, there is a spherical protrusion covered with hair at the end of the snout with deep grooves on both sides, triangular ears that join at the top of the head, and the body is dark black-brown in color.

翼手目ヒナコウモリ科の哺乳類。トウブチチブコウモリともいう。全身黒色に近く,顔が扁平で中型の虫食性のコウモリ。日本では1883年埼玉県秩父郡で1頭初めて採集された。和名はこの地名に由来する。カフカスからインド北部,中国西部および日本(北海道・東北・関東・中部地方)に分布するが,どの地域でもきわめてまれである。日本では人家内,洞窟内に単独で冬眠し,夏の活動期にミズナラ,カラマツなどの混交林にすむ。前腕長40~42mm,頭胴長49~62mm,鼻孔が大きく,吻(ふん)の先に毛で覆われた球形の突起とその両側に深い溝をもち,三角形の耳介は頭頂部で合一し,体は濃い黒茶色を呈する。
