The imperial family (138-192) that produced the 2nd-century Roman emperors Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, and Commodus. Pius followed the example of the previous emperors Nerva, Trajan, and Hadrian in adopting Marcus as his son, but Marcus chose his own son Commodus as his successor. During this period, the imperial administration became increasingly problematic as financial and military pressures in the pursuit of the greatest territorial reach of the so-called Pax Romana (Roman Peace) period intensified.
