The Spanish author Cervantes published the first part in 1605 and the second part in 1615. The official title of the novel is El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha. In the preface to the first part, Cervantes hints that the work was born in a prison, but it is likely that he conceived of it or began writing it in 1602, when he was imprisoned in Seville at the age of 55.

スペインの作家セルバンテスが1605年に前編を，1615年に後編を発表した小説で，正式の題名は《才智あふれる郷士ドン･キホーテ･デ･ラ･マンチャEl ingenioso hidalgo Don Quijote de la Mancha》。セルバンテスは〈前編〉の序文において，この作品が牢獄の中で生まれたことをほのめかしているが，おそらく1602年，55歳の彼がセビリャで入獄していたときにその構想を得たか，書き始めたものと考えられる。
