A general term for insects in the Hymenoptera order, excluding the Formicidae family. There are approximately 100,000 species (known species only) found worldwide. Many species are found in the tropics, and large and beautiful species are almost exclusively found in the tropics. They generally have four membranous wings, but some species have no wings in either males or females. In the evolved species of Ceratopogonida, the female's ovipositor also functions as a stinger, which is used for defense and hunting. They undergo complete metamorphosis, and the pupa generally spins a cocoon before pupating. They are broadly divided into the suborder Lutocarya, which has no abdominal constriction, and the suborder Lutocarya, which has a constriction between the first and second abdominal segments. The former include sawflies and horn wasps that feed on plant leaves, and those that feed on stems and trunks. The latter include carnivorous parasitic wasps and carnivorous wasps, and bees that feed on pollen and nectar.
