Oistrakh

Japanese: オイストラフ
Oistrakh
Russian violinist. Born in Odessa, Ukraine (then part of Russia), he studied at the Odessa Conservatory. He won second place after Neveu at the Wieniawski International Violin Competition in 1935, and first place at the Ysaye Competition (later the Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition) in Brussels in 1937. He made his Western debut in Paris and London in 1953, and his US debut in 1955. His large-scale performances, supported by his highly technical technique, earned him a reputation on a par with Heifetz. He premiered many works by composers from the former Soviet Union, including Shostakovich's concertos and sonatas. Prokofiev's Violin Sonata No. 2 (1944) was arranged from the Flute Sonata composed the previous year at the suggestion of Oistrakh (premiered by Oistrakh and Oborin). In his later years, he also conducted. He first visited Japan in 1955. His students include Kremer. →Kogan/Khachaturian/Richter
