An unmanned aircraft without a pilot. The name is derived from the English word "drone bee." They range in size from small ones with a total length of about 10 cm to large ones with a length of over 30 meters, and some are shaped like helicopters or airships. They can be equipped with devices such as cameras, acceleration sensors, and gyro sensors that detect tilt and angle, and research institutes and companies around the world are exploring ways to utilize them. The difference between them and traditional radio-controlled vehicles is that they can fly automatically, and they can be flown with the purpose of fulfilling some role, rather than just being flown.
Originally developed for military purposes such as reconnaissance and airstrikes, it gained worldwide attention when the United States used it to attack Taliban leaders, an Islamic fundamentalist organization, in Pakistan and other countries. In recent years, with the reduction in costs of batteries and sensors due to the mass production of smartphones and the development of automatic control technology using computers, it is expected that new markets will expand to the civilian sector.
Specifically, American companies Amazon and Google are researching delivery services using drones. In Japan, Chiba University Professor Kenzo Nonami, who is said to be a leading expert in drone research, is working on developing a commercially available model that can carry packages. Also, in January 2015, a private project was launched in Takamatsu City to attempt to transport goods using small drones.
Drone technology is developing at a remarkable pace, but operational rules have not kept up, raising concerns about safety in the event of a crash and the invasion of privacy. For example, in the United States, where many planes fly overhead, drones can only fly at altitudes of 122 meters or less. Furthermore, commercial use is prohibited in principle, and industries such as film, agriculture, and real estate must apply to the Federal Aviation Administration for exceptions each time they are used.
Under Japan's aviation law, drones are treated the same as model airplanes, and except in certain areas, no notification is required for use at altitudes up to 250 meters, making it easy to conduct experiments, etc. However, when it comes to actually operating them, it is said that the same level of regulations as for airplanes, such as safety standards, manager qualifications, and insurance, will need to be established.
In the future, it is expected that the drone will be put to practical use for a variety of purposes, such as transporting supplies during disasters, investigating dangerous areas such as disaster sites, general agricultural work such as spraying pesticides, and transporting parts within factories.

操縦士が乗らない、無人飛行機のこと。英語の「雄ミツバチ」から転じた。大きさは、全長10センチ程度の小型のものから、30メートル超の大型のものまであり、ヘリコプターや飛行船の形をしたものもある。カメラや加速度センサー、傾きや角度などを検出するジャイロセンサーといった機器を装備して利用できるため、世界の研究機関や企業などが活用方法を模索している。従来のラジコンとの違いとしては、自動飛行が可能なことや、ただ飛ばすだけでなく、何らかの役割を果たすという目的を持って飛行させることなどが挙げられる。
もともとは、偵察や空爆など、軍事目的の開発から始まり、米国がパキスタンなどで、イスラム原理主義組織であるタリバンの幹部らを攻撃するのに使用したことから、世界的に注目されるようになった。近年、スマートフォンの大量生産による電池やセンサーの低コスト化やコンピューターによる自動制御技術の発展で、民間への新市場拡大が期待されている。
具体的に、米国のアマゾンやグーグルは、ドローンを利用した宅配サービスの研究を進めている。日本では、ドローン研究の第一人者と言われる千葉大学の野波健蔵・特別教授が、荷物の積載が可能な市販モデルの開発に取り組んでいる。また、2015年1月には、高松市で、小型のドローンを使った物資の輸送に挑戦する、民間のプロジェクトなどが行われた。
ドローンの技術開発は目覚ましい速さで進められているが、運用ルールは追いついておらず、墜落した際の安全確保やプライバシーの侵害などが問題視されている。例えば、上空を多くの飛行機が行きかう米国では、高度122メートル以下しか飛行できない。その上、商業利用は原則として禁止されており、映画や農業、不動産業界などは、使用するごとに米連邦航空局に申請して、例外措置を取得している状況だ。
日本の航空法では、ドローンは模型飛行機と同じ扱いで、一部の区域を除けば高度250メートルまでの使用なら届け出は不要なため、実験などは行いやすい。しかし、実際に運用するとなると、安全基準や管理者資格、保険といった、飛行機と同レベルの規制を整備する必要があると言われている。
今後は、災害時の物資の輸送や災害現場など危険地域での調査、農薬の散布など農作業全般、工場内での部品の輸送など、様々な用途での実用化が期待されている。
