Ernst Dronke

German social novelist. Born in Koblenz as the son of a gymnasium teacher, he studied law in Bonn and Marburg. In 1846, he published novels with a true socialist tendency, such as Police Story and From the Life of the Common People. In the same year, he also wrote a reportage called Berlin, but in 1847, he was sentenced to two years in prison and imprisoned for its contents being "disrespectful to the king" and "inciting the masses." In March 1848, he took advantage of the chaos of the revolutionary period to escape and go to Brussels, where he befriended Engels and joined the Communist League.

ドイツの社会小説家。コブレンツのギムナジウム教師の子として生まれ，ボン，マールブルクで法律を学ぶ。1846年に《警察物語》《庶民の暮しから》等の真正社会主義的傾向の小説を発表。また同年にはルポルタージュ《ベルリン》も執筆するが，その内容が〈国王に対する不敬〉〈民衆の煽動〉等にあたるとの理由で47年，禁固2年の判決を受け投獄された。48年3月，革命期の混乱に乗じて脱走してブリュッセルへ赴き，そこでエンゲルスと親交を結び，共産主義者同盟に加入。
