1822‐91 German social novelist. Born in Koblenz as the son of a gymnasium teacher, he studied law in Bonn and Marburg. In 1846, he published novels with a true socialist tendency, such as Police Story and From the Life of the Common People. In the same year, he also wrote a reportage called Berlin, but in 1847, he was sentenced to two years in prison and imprisoned for its contents being "disrespectful to the king" and "inciting the masses." In March 1848, he took advantage of the chaos of the revolutionary period to escape and go to Brussels, where he befriended Engels and joined the Communist League.
