American English does not have the regional dialect differentiation that it had in the Old World, due to its recent history, the frequent geographical movement of its inhabitants, and the need for a common language for communication among many ethnic groups. Traditionally, it has been divided into three major dialects: (1) the eastern dialects of New England, (2) the southern dialects that range from Virginia to the southwest and eastern Texas, and (3) General American (GA), which is spoken in the rest of the world. However, as a result of recent progress in research into linguistic geography, more detailed dialect classifications have been attempted. The classification criteria are mainly based on pronunciation.
