...The city center is located on a terrace on the northeast bank of the Watarase River, and is a settlement at the valley entrance of the Kiryu River, a tributary of the Watarase River. In the early days of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Kiryu Kunitsuna built Kiryu Castle on Hishiyakuyama Mountain to the north of the city, but the area around the castle did not prosper. In the early modern period, Kiryu Shinmachi was systematically developed to the south from the front of Kiryu Tenmangu Shrine, and in the early 17th century, a silk market was opened, establishing the foundations of Kiryu textiles.
