Ryukichi Inada

Physician. Born in Nagoya. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Imperial University in 1900 (Meiji 33), he became an assistant professor there and worked in the Department of Internal Medicine, studying under Aoyama Tanemichi. In 1902, he studied in Germany, and in 1905, returned to Japan and was appointed professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Kyushu Imperial University. In 1909, he treated his first patient with Weil's disease, which prompted him to begin research on the disease. In 1915 (Taisho 4), together with Ido Yasushi, he discovered Leptospira icterohaemolagiae, the pathogen of hemorrhagic jaundice (Weil's disease). The following year, in 1916, he and Ido Yasushi received the Imperial Academy Prize for this research. In 1918, he became a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Imperial University, later a member of the Imperial Academy, president of the Japan Medical Corps, and president of the Japan Medical Association. In 1944 (Showa 19), he was awarded the Order of Culture.

内科医。名古屋生まれ。1900年（明治33）東京帝国大学医科大学を卒業、同大学助手となり、内科学教室に勤務し、青山胤通(たねみち)に師事した。1902年ドイツに留学、1905年帰国し、九州帝国大学医科大学教授に任ぜられた。1909年、初めてワイル病患者を手がけたことがきっかけで、同病に関する研究を開始、1915年（大正4）井戸泰(やすし)とともに出血性黄疸(おうだん)症（ワイル病）の病原体レプトスピラ・イクテロヘモラギエーを発見。翌1916年、この研究により帝国学士院恩賜賞を井戸泰とともに受賞した。1918年東京帝大医学部教授、のち帝国学士院会員、日本医療団総裁、日本医師会会長となった。1944年（昭和19）文化勲章を受章した。
