Physician. Born in Nagoya. Graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Imperial University in 1900 (Meiji 33), he became an assistant professor there and worked in the Department of Internal Medicine, studying under Aoyama Tanemichi. In 1902, he studied in Germany, and in 1905, returned to Japan and was appointed professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Kyushu Imperial University. In 1909, he treated his first patient with Weil's disease, which prompted him to begin research on the disease. In 1915 (Taisho 4), together with Ido Yasushi, he discovered Leptospira icterohaemolagiae, the pathogen of hemorrhagic jaundice (Weil's disease). The following year, in 1916, he and Ido Yasushi received the Imperial Academy Prize for this research. In 1918, he became a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Imperial University, later a member of the Imperial Academy, president of the Japan Medical Corps, and president of the Japan Medical Association.
