Kama is an old town in Kaho District, in the middle reaches of the Onga River, in central Fukuoka Prefecture. After the Mitsui Yamano Mine opened in 1898, it developed rapidly and became one of the leading coal mining towns in the Chikuho region, but the Yamano Mine was significantly scaled down in 1963 and closed in 1973. In recent years, the town has been trying to attract businesses, mainly light industry. In March 2006, it merged with Yamada City, Usui Town in Kaho District, and Kaho Town to become a city, Kama City. Area: 17.34 km2 . Population: 19,919 (2003).
