A biennial plant of the Caryophyllaceae family. It is widely distributed in the temperate and warm-warm zones of eastern Asia, and is commonly found along roadsides and in fields in many places. The stems are thin and dark purple, and grow in clusters that branch from the base of the plant. They are densely hairy, with glandular hairs mixed in at the top. The leaves are ovate or oblong, blunt, hairy on both sides, and opposite each other. In spring, the tip of the stem branches, forming a cyme that produces many small white flowers. There are five sepals, which are oblong and hairy on the back. There are five petals, which are thin and tubular, and do not open flat like chickweed. The tip of each sepal is bilobed. There are ten stamens, and the pistil has five styles. A closely related naturalized plant, C. viscosum , is native to Europe and has spread as a weed in urban areas.
