George Macaulay Trevelyan

British historian. His father was the nephew of the famous historian and politician Macaulay, who was also a politician and an outstanding historian of American history. After graduating from Cambridge University, he became a special research fellow (1898-1903), left the university for a time to devote himself to writing, and served in the First World War. In 1926, he was appointed professor of the Royal Commission on Modern History at his alma mater, and from 1940 onwards he served as president of Trinity College at the same university and president of Durham University. He focused on political history from a liberal standpoint, following in the tradition of his great-uncle Macaulay, and is renowned for his deep scholarship on British history in general and his vivid literary descriptions. His work, A History of Britain (1926), is widely read and loved as a good general history of Britain. His other major works include England in the Time of Wycliffe (1899), England under the Stuarts (1904), Garibaldi, trilogy (1907-11), England under Queen Anne, trilogy (1930-34), The English Revolution, 1688-89 (1934), and A Social History of England (1942).
