〘名〙① 仏語。出家して仏道を修行し、仏法に精通して、衆生を正しく導く師となる者。※円照上人行状(1302)「通悟性相、名為恵学、阿毗達摩所似精祥、名之法師」 〔法華経‐序品〕② 僧侶。出家。※書紀(720)崇峻元年是歳(図書寮本訓)「僧(ホウシ)恵・令斤・恵等を遣して仏の舎利を献る」※徒然草(1331頃)五二「仁和寺にある法師、年寄るまで、石清水を拝まざりければ」③ (昔、男の子は頭髪をそっていたところからいう) 男の子。坊(ぼう)。※俳諧・誹諧之連歌(飛梅千句)(1540)京何第九「少人のいにしへ今のひとりごと いつかほうしのうかひ出まし」④ 俗人の法体した者。特に琴、三味線の師匠をし、また遊興の相手などする座頭。※浮世草子・好色二代男(1684)六「夢松、昼太夫と、替名呼て、皆六十余の法師(ホウシ)也」⑤ 「ほうしむしゃ(法師武者)」の略。⑥ ある語に添えて「人」の意を表わす語。多く、「ぼうし」と濁る。「一寸法師」「影法師」など。
