Around the time of the Kan'ei reconstruction, Nonomura Ninsei opened a kiln near the temple gate, and it is well known that the Ninsei kiln, or Omuro ware, was popular among nobles, temple and shrine officials, samurai, and upper-class townspeople. In the late Edo period, the 88 sacred sites of Shikoku were moved to Jojusan, west of Ouchiyama, and became the Omuro 88 sacred sites, attracting the faith of the common people, and many pilgrims still visit today. The long tradition of the Imperial Gate was banned by the Meiji Restoration government's policy toward the Imperial family's religion, and came to an end when Prince Sumihito returned to secular life in 1867 (Keio 3). ...
