The Greeks generally called elegeia a short poem consisting of a couplet of alternating lines of hexagrams and pentagrams, sung to the accompaniment of a flute, and this form and name were also adopted by ancient Roman poets. In classical Greece, the content of this form was diverse, including themes such as politics, military affairs, philosophy of life, views of God, wine, and beautiful boys, and many tombstones were written in this form. …
