For ordinary ships that navigate on the water, the most common means of directional control is a rudder attached to the stern, except for special propulsors (such as Voith-Schuider propellers and oscillating screw propellers) that change the direction of thrust to give the ship a turning force, and side thrusters that generate sideways thrust. This is a rudder that rotates around a vertical axis, but for submersibles that navigate underwater, a horizontal rudder (a rudder that rotates around a horizontal axis) is also required to control the depth of the ship, such as when diving or surfacing. The effect of a rudder on an ordinary surface ship is large when the screw propeller rotates forward and the ship's forward speed is above a certain level, but its effect is small when the ship is stopped or moving forward at a low speed. …
