A commercial centre in the Netherlands that flourished in the early Middle Ages. It is located southeast of Utrecht, at the junction of the Rhine and Lek rivers. It was established in the first half of the 7th century as a key commercial centre in northwestern Europe by the Frisians, who were active in commerce at the time, and flourished from the mid-8th century to the late 9th century. From the mid-9th century, it was repeatedly attacked by the Normans, causing it to decline and eventually disappear. Excavations have shown that the city area was about 1 km long and 200-650 m wide, and most of the remains are imported goods from abroad.
