Asante Kingdom

...The second largest city in Ghana, West Africa. Population 385,000 (1988). Located about 200 km inland northwest of the capital Accra, it is the capital of the Ashanti region. The region is a cocoa producing area, and as a distribution center for cocoa, it has a well-developed road network, and is connected to Accra and the port of Takoradi by highway and rail. In addition to being a commercial and industrial center, it is home to higher education institutions such as the University of Science and Technology, museums, and agricultural research stations. The Ashanti (Asante) Kingdom was established at the end of the 17th century, and Kumasi was built as its capital around 1700.
