Travel notes - Kaikoku Zakki

A travelogue from the late Muromachi period. Written by the third empress of Shogoin Monzeki, the great priest Doko, it was completed in 1487 (Chokyo 1). It has five volumes and is collected in Gunsho Ruiju, Kai Sōsho and other publications. In the summer of the previous year (Bunmei 18), Doko, aged 57, left Kyoto and travelled from Wakasa (southwest of Fukui Prefecture) via the Hokuriku route to various parts of the Kanto region, and then on to the Tohoku region. He formed elegant friendships with samurai and monks from various regions, visited famous places and historical sites, recorded legends, and wrote Chinese poetry, waka poetry and hokku (poems) as far as Matsushima and the Natori River in Oshu. An excellent travelogue, it is an important historical source on the situation in the eastern provinces at the time, as well as the cultural and transportation history of various regions.

室町時代後期の紀行。聖護院門跡(しょうごいんもんぜき)の准三后(じゅさんごう)、道興(どうこう)大僧正の著で、1487年（長享1）に成立。5巻あり、『群書類従(ぐんしょるいじゅう)』『甲斐叢書(かいそうしょ)』などに所収。その前年（文明18）夏、57歳の道興は京を出立し、若狭(わかさ)（福井県南西部）から北陸路を経て関東各地を遊歴し、さらに東北地方に赴いた。各地の武士や僧と雅交を結び、名所旧跡を訪ね、伝説を記録し、漢詩、和歌、発句(ほっく)を交えて奥州松島・名取川まで至っている。紀行文としても優れ、当時の東国の状況や各地の文化史、交通史の重要史料である。
