Toluca - Toluca (English spelling)

Japanese: トルカ - とるか(英語表記)Toluca
Toluca - Toluca (English spelling)

The capital of the State of Mexico in central Mexico. Its official name is Toluca de Lerdo. It is located 66 km west of the capital, Mexico City, in the Toluca Valley in the central plateau of Mexico. At 2,653 meters above sea level, it is the highest city in North America, higher than the capital. It has a population of 435,125 (2000). It is the center of the surrounding agricultural and livestock regions, and is connected to the capital by road and rail, so modern industries such as food, chemicals, textiles, and machinery have also developed. Blankets, pottery, and baskets are local specialties, and a regular market is held on Fridays, attracting tourists looking for folk crafts. A church built in 1530 and rebuilt in 1585 remains. As it was an area inhabited by Indians, there are many ruins in the vicinity. Toluca Volcano (4,577 meters) towering to the southwest is the symbol of the town. The official name is named after Mexican President Sebastián Lerdo.
