Aluminum oxide and many other metal oxides that do not dissolve in water or fire were called "earth," but this is the general term for the metallic elements that make up earth. Generally, it refers to aluminum and the rare earth elements, but it can also refer to the four elements in Group 13 of the periodic table (boron group elements) excluding boron: aluminum, gallium, indium, and thallium (sometimes called aluminum group elements).
