A town in Yoshino County in central Nara Prefecture. It occupies the left bank of the middle reaches of the Yoshino River, and the main settlement, which is on the Kintetsu Yoshino Line, is along the tributary, the Akino River. It developed as a market town in the Yoshino region. It is a lumber distribution center, and woodworking is thriving. It is also a thriving producer of disposable chopsticks, and high-quality cedar chopsticks made from fragrant Yoshino cedar are particularly famous. There is a lower shrine of Nyukawakami Shrine. 61.99 km2 . Population 7,020 (2010).
