The preservation of buildings that retain their ancient appearance together with their surrounding environment. This includes various activities such as administrative measures and resident movements for that purpose.

In Japan, during the period of high economic growth from the 1950s to the 60s, the redevelopment of the country was promoted, and the old townscapes that remained throughout the country were rapidly destroyed, and there was a fear that cities would become uniform and lose their individuality. In addition, huge buildings and structures that were incongruous in both scale and design were constructed close to the townscape.
