Esan ruins

Japanese: 恵山遺跡 - えさんいせき

This is a post-Jomon period site located near the tip of a 15m-high terrace facing the Tsugaru Strait in Esan Town, eastern Oshima Peninsula, Hokkaido. Since ancient times, exquisite bone and horn tools have been collected here, and academic surveys were conducted twice, in 1940 and 1966. It is a standard site for Esan-style pottery, which is similar to Yayoi-style pottery in the northern Tohoku region, such as Inakadate-style and Futababashi-style pottery, and a tomb and a thin shell layer have been discovered here. The plan of the burial pit is an oval shape with major and minor axes of 170cm and 70cm, and a depth of 60-130cm. The body buried there was almost completely corroded, but it was buried in a flexed position facing northwest, and pottery and stone tools were buried as grave goods. Large and small pebbles were piled on top of the pit, and occasionally arranged in a masonry formation.

北海道，渡島半島の東部，恵山町の津軽海峡に面した標高15mの段丘先端近くにある続縄文時代の遺跡。古くから精巧な骨角器が採集されていたが，1940年と66年の2回，学術調査が行われた。東北地方北部の弥生式土器である田舎館式，二枚橋式土器などに近い恵山式土器の出土する標準遺跡であり，墳墓と薄い貝層が発見されている。墓壙の平面形は，長･短軸が170cm，70cmの楕円形で，深さ60～130cm。埋葬された遺体は，ほとんど腐食していたが，西北頭位･屈葬で，土器･石器が副葬されており，墓壙上には大小の礫を積み，まれに組石状に配置されているものもあった。
