Drina (English spelling)

Japanese: ドリナ[川]（英語表記）Drina

The longest tributary of the Sava River, which flows through the northwestern Balkans. It flows from south to north, with a total length of 346 km. It originates in the Piva and Tara rivers in Montenegro, flows north along the border between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, and joins the Sava at Sremska Rača in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Serbia. The Drina tributaries include the Rim, Sučeska, Prača, and Janja. Because of its fast flow, there are hydroelectric power plants in various places. The Drina basin was the site of fierce fighting between the Austrian and Serbian armies from September to November 1914 at the beginning of World War I, and was also a major stage for partisan struggle against the Axis forces during World War II.

バルカン半島北西部を流れるサバ川の最も長い支流。南から北に流れ，全長346km。モンテネグロのピバ川とタラ川に源を発し，セルビアとボスニア･ヘルツェゴビナの国境をなして北流，セルビアのボイボディナ自治州のスレムスカ･ラチャでサバ川と合流する。ドリナ川の支流としてはリム川，スーチェスカ川，プラチャ川，ヤーニャ川などがある。流れが速いため，各地に水力発電所がある。ドリナ川流域地方は第1次世界大戦当初の1914年9～11月，オーストリア軍とセルビア軍が激烈な戦いを繰り返した場所であるし，第2次世界大戦に際しては，枢軸軍に対するパルチザン闘争の主要な舞台にもなった。
