A small island in the southern part of the Indian Ocean coast of Tanzania. In the north lies Kilwa Kisiwani, a beautiful port city founded by the Persians in the 9th century. It has flourished as a trading port in the Indian Ocean since ancient times, but is said to have been destroyed in the 16th century by the Bantu people on the mainland. It also served as a stopover point for the slave trade until the early 19th century. The ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani, along with the ruins of the nearby Songo Mnara Island, were registered as a World Heritage Site in 1981. Kilwa Masoko is a new city built on the mainland across from Kilwa Island. → Related article Tanzania Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
