Iizuka Rokansai - Iizuka Rokansai

Bamboo artist. His real name was Yanosuke. He was born in Tochigi Prefecture. He learned bamboo techniques from his father, Houou (1851-1916), from an early age. He received a bronze medal at the Paris World's Fair in 1926 (Taisho 15), and exhibited at the Chicago World's Fair in 1933 (Showa 8). He produced items for the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Taisho and elegant works presented at the grand ceremony of Emperor Showa. His bamboo box at the 13th Teiten Exhibition (1932) and his bamboo furosaki byobu folding screen at the 15th Teiten Exhibition were both specially selected, and he often served as a judge at the Bunten Exhibition, became a member of the Japan Art Academy, and served as a director of the Japan Kogei Association. His achievements in the bamboo craft world are due to his intricate and detailed bamboo techniques and his original and innovative designs, which have elevated the everyday bamboo craft to a work of art that is both aesthetic and highly appreciable. His representative works include the flower basket "Mei Anko" (National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo) and the flower basket "Fuki" (National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto).

竹工芸家。本名彌之助。栃木県生まれ。幼少より父鳳翁(ほうおう)（1851―1916）に竹技を学び、1926年（大正15）パリ万国博覧会で銅賞を受け、1933年（昭和8）シカゴ万国博覧会に出品。大正天皇の即位式用品や、昭和天皇の大礼献上品などの製作をしている。第13回帝展（1932）の竹製筥(はこ)、第15回帝展の竹風爐先屏風(たけふろさきびょうぶ)は特選となり、文展ではしばしば審査員を務め、芸術院会員となり、日本工芸会の理事を務めた。竹工芸界における業績は、精巧できめの細かな竹技と独創的で斬新(ざんしん)な意匠で表現された彼の作品によって、いわば、日常生活用具的竹細工を、美的で鑑賞性に富んだ芸術品に引き上げたことにある。代表作に花籠(はなかご)「銘あんこう」（東京国立近代美術館）、花籃(はなかご)「富貴(ふうき)」（京都国立近代美術館）などがある。
