A large tree of the Euphorbiaceae family native to tropical Asia. It reaches a height of 20-25m. The leaves are alternate, compound, with long stalks and 3 leaflets. Each leaflet is 8-15cm long, ovate-elliptical, and has finely toothed edges. In spring, racemes or panicles appear in the leaf axils, bearing numerous greenish-yellow flowers. Dioecious. Female plants produce large amounts of fruit that are oblate, 1-1.5cm in diameter, brown when ripe, and contain 3-4 seeds. It is cultivated for timber in the Ryukyu Islands and Ogasawara Islands, and although it has escaped, it has become extremely wild, especially in Ogasawara.
