Idris Alawma

King of the Kanem-Bornou Empire, which ruled the area around Lake Chad in Central Africa. Date of birth and death unknown. Active from around 1570 to the early 17th century, he is famous as the king who brought the empire to its peak. Shortly after ascending to the throne, during a pilgrimage to Mecca (the empire had been an Islamic state since the end of the 11th century), he discovered the power of guns and ammunition, and brought along a Turkish military instructor to teach his soldiers how to use them. By incorporating this into the existing cavalry, he dramatically strengthened his military power, driving the Tuareg to the northern border and eliminating other forces that threatened the country.

中部アフリカのチャド湖周辺を支配したカネム･ボルヌー帝国の王。生没年不詳。1570年ごろから17世紀初頭まで活躍，この帝国に最盛期をもたらした王として名高い。即位直後のメッカ巡礼(帝国は11世紀末以来イスラム国)の際に銃と弾薬の威力を知り，トルコ人の軍事教官を連れてきて兵にその扱い方を学ばせた。これを元来あった騎兵隊にもたせて軍事力を飛躍的に強化し，トゥアレグ族を北辺に追いやるなど，国を脅かす勢力を駆逐した。
