Long-day plants are plants in which flower bud formation occurs or is promoted under photoperiodic conditions where the length of the dark period is shorter than a certain time (critical dark period). If the length of the dark period is short enough, the length of the light period is irrelevant. In cases of long dark periods, flower bud formation can be observed by interrupting the light. Wheat, Arabidopsis, dianthus, henbane, spinach, Rose of Sharon, Dianthus orbiculatus, and blue chickweed are examples of long-day plants. Long-day plants generally form flower buds when the day length becomes longer in nature. Many long-day plants require a certain period of cold before the photoperiodic conditions (long days) are met (long-day biennial plants).
