A document on Kabuki. Written by Nyugatei Ganyu. Published in the autumn of 1801 (Kyowa 1). The inscription reads "Author's Method." It is the only theoretical book by an Osaka Kabuki author. It has been handed down as a manuscript. According to Kyokutei Bakin's "Sakusakudou Ichiyubanashi," the author was Shoza Namiki II. Other theories suggest that it was Gohei Namiki I or Osuke Namiki. In any case, the author, an elder of the Osaka theater world, lamented the current state of disarray in the methods used by Kabuki authors, and wrote about the author's methods of the past in 23 entries (26 entries in the table of contents). While specifically describing the differences in tastes in kyogen among audiences in the three major cities of Kyoto, Edo, and Osaka, the knowledge and skills needed to write scripts for each season, and the differences in how each act within a single kyogen play is written, the book also mixes in popular moral lessons in the style of a Taoist scholar, attempting to theoretically systematize the work of kabuki composers.
