...The period from 1780 to 1830 was the golden age of French natural history. Particularly notable scholars include GLCFD Cuvier, who broke the Great Chain of Being (the theory that the living world is arranged in a straight line in a hierarchy from angels to amoebas), which had long been the central axis of taxonomy; François Levaillant (1753-1824), who published an illustrated book on African birds; and René-Primevère Lesson (1794-1849), the first Westerner to observe a living bird of paradise.Particularly notable artists who produced beautiful illustrated books include Jean Baptiste Audebert (1759-1800) (The Natural History of Hummingbirds), Jacques Barraband (1768-1809) (Parrots), and Jean Gabriel Prêtre (active in the first half of the 19th century) (The Natural History of the Bird of Paradise). The Belgian botanical artist Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was called the "Raphael of Flowers" and was loved by people all over the world. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Barraband, J." is listed below.
