The capital of Suffolk County in the east of England. It is part of the Ipswich district. It is located about 110 km northeast of London, facing the innermost part of the estuary of the River Orwell, which flows into the North Sea. The remains of a Roman settlement and a 6th century Saxon graveyard have been excavated. From the 7th to the 12th centuries, it was known as a center of pottery, first producing Ipswich ware and then Thetford ware. It then prospered as an export port for textiles from East Anglia until the 17th century. During the Industrial Revolution, it became a center of light industry. With fertile agricultural land behind it, industries such as flour milling, sugar (beet sugar), beer brewing, fertilizer, and agricultural machinery developed. The port mainly handles imports of petroleum products, grain, timber, and chemical products. Area 40 km2 . Population 138,718 (2001).
