A river that flows south through the western part of Kyoto city. It originates in Takagamine, Kita Ward, and flows into the Katsura River at Kisshoin, Minami Ward. It is a small river with a total length of about 14 kilometers. During the Heian period, paper makers lived near Kitano, and paper was made for the Imperial Court under the management of Kamiyain, so the river was called Kamiya River, but nowadays the river south of Senzoku-cho, Takagamine is also called Tenjin River. Also, on the riverbank near Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, remains an earthen wall built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
