A city in the southwest of Miyazaki Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1924. It is centered on the Miyakonojo Basin and stretches from the southeastern slope of Mount Kirishima to the north to the Wanitsuka mountain range to the south. The city center developed as a castle town for the Shimazu clan, and is a transportation hub where the Nippo Main Line runs, the Kitto Line branches off, and the Miyazaki Expressway passes through, as well as the commercial and industrial center of the basin. Since the mid-1980s, the number of companies moving into the city has increased, and industrial shipments have grown, mainly in food, beverages, and rubber, but the majority of businesses are small and medium-sized. Traditional industries include furniture and weapon manufacturing. Livestock farming is thriving, including Miyakonojo beef breeding. Tea, burdock, scallions, and taro are also cultivated. Mochio is a famous cherry blossom spot. There are the Imamachi Ichirizuka (historic site), Sekinoo Oketsu (natural monument), and Sekinoo Falls. In January 2006, the towns of Takasaki, Yamada, Takajo, and Yamanokuchi in Kitamorokata County were incorporated. Area: 653.36 km2 . Population: 169,602 (2010).
